V.V. Rajesh is going to become the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation. This announcement was made during the meeting of all the winning councilors held at the BJP office here. Party general secretary S. Suresh said that all the winning candidates of BJP are capable of becoming Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

He told, “Rajesh will be our mayor candidate. His political career started in the year 1996. At the same time, Asha Nath has been made the candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor, who is currently elected councilor for the third time.”

Although the formal election of the mayor will be held on Friday, Rajesh’s victory is almost certain as both the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) have announced to field their candidates for the post of mayor.

This development comes after the spectacular performance of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the local body elections held on December 9. In these elections, BJP wrested control of the Municipal Corporation from CPI(M), which had been in control for almost 45 years.

BJP won majority on its own by winning 50 out of total 100 wards. LDF got 29 seats, while UDF was reduced to 19 seats. Independent candidates won on two seats, while in one ward voting was postponed due to the death of an independent candidate.

Since the results were declared on December 9, there was intense discussion going on in the BJP regarding the post of Mayor. State BJP President Rajiv Chandrashekhar visited New Delhi twice to discuss this matter with the central leadership, which can be gauged from the political importance of this decision.

Within the party, V.V. Rajesh and recently retired former Director General of Police R. The names of Sreelekha were being discussed. Ultimately, after the intervention of the BJP national leadership, Rajesh’s name was agreed upon.

It is believed that Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) also strongly supported Rajesh, which had an impact on the final decision. On Thursday, senior party leaders R. Met Sreelekha and informed her about the leadership’s decision and sought her support, thereby ending the ongoing speculation regarding this post.

After the formal election of Mayor was over and the results were declared, V.V. Rajesh will take oath. With this he will become the first mayor of BJP in Thiruvananthapuram.
