AAP MP Vikram Sahney Calls for Urgent Action on Gig Workers’ Social Security

Member of Parliament Dr. Vikram Sahney has called for concrete and timely action to address the growing concerns of gig workers, noting that recent disruptions by quick-commerce delivery executives on Christmas Eve, and strike call announced for New Year’s Eve.

Dr. Sahney mentioned that he had raised this matter in Parliament in December 2024, well before it manifested on the streets, highlighting the absence of a comprehensive social security framework for gig workers.

As per figures placed on record in Parliament, India’s gig workforce stood at 7.7 million in 2020–21 and is projected to grow to 23.5 million by 2029–30.

Expressing concern over reports of shrinking earnings & unresolved issues of social security could impact gig workers in E commerce, logistics, home services and healthcare support.

” All Employers must register gig workers on E sharam Portal without fail ” said Dr Sahney.

“New-age jobs need new-age protections. Social security must reach the ground,” he said.
