Record breaking crowd at MCG for Boxing Day Ashes Test
**94,199 fans** gathered at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Day 1 of the fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England on December 26, 2025, setting a new record for the highest ever crowd for a cricket match at the iconic venue.
This figure surpassed the previous record of 93,013 set in the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup Final (Australia vs New Zealand) and also surpassed the previous one-day Test record of 91,112 set on the first day of the 2013 Boxing Day Ashes Test.
With tickets for days two and three sold out, the match is on track to challenge 2013’s record total Ashes audience of 271,865.
Australia starts this Test series with a **3-0** lead, with the Sydney Test remaining. Under Cricket Australia’s extended agreement until the summer of 2030–31, the MCG has hosted the Boxing Day Test every year since 1950.
Looking ahead, the MCG will host a historic **Day-Night Pink-Ball Test** from March 11-15, 2027, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first Test match (which was played there in 1877). This will be the Australian men’s team’s first pink-ball match at this venue.
Given the overwhelming demand, Cricket Australia launched its first ticket ballot, which opened on December 23, 2025 and closed on February 6, 2026, with successful applicants to be informed by February 13.
This record-breaking crowd reflects the continued popularity of the Ashes and the MCG’s status as a global sporting venue.
