Acting President of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Tariq Rahman has returned to his country after 17 years. Tariq Rahman is the son of former Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. After returning to the country, Tariq Rahman said in his speech that he has a plan. A huge crowd gathered in Dhaka to listen to Tariq Rahman. Addressing the Bangladeshi people, Rahman said that “American civil rights activist Martin Luther King said in a public speech, ‘I have a dream.’ Like him, I also want to say that I have a plan for Bangladesh.”

Rahman, seen as a strong contender to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh, addressed the nation as “Dear Bangladesh” and thanked party workers and citizens who supported the BNP in his absence. Rahman said, “If you support us, I have a plan that will be successful for this country,” and urged his countrymen to become partners in nation building.

In his speech, Tariq Rehman drew parallels between the 1971 liberation war and the 2024 insurgency against the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Along with this, Rahman said that “We will have to repay the debt of the blood of the martyrs.” Rahman further said that “We liberated Bangladesh in 1971. We will liberate it again in 2024.” He said, “On August 5, 2024, the people protected the independence and sovereignty of the country.”

Tariq Rahman, returning to Bangladesh after 17 years, also talked about the current political environment of the country. Rahman said that “Bangladesh belongs to everyone.” Tariq Rahman stressed the need for tolerance. “This is a land of hills and plains, where Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians all live equally. We want to create a safe Bangladesh, a country where any woman, man or child can safely leave their home and return safely,” Rahman said.
