Murder: Indian student shot dead near University of Toronto campus
Toronto. A 20-year-old Indian research (doctoral) student was shot dead near the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto in Canada. Police are investigating the case from the angle of murder. According to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) news, the firing incident occurred on Tuesday. Toronto Police on Wednesday identified the deceased as Shivank Awasthi. Duty Inspector Jeff Ellington told reporters near the scene on Tuesday night that police were called to a report of an injured man lying near Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road at about 3:30 this afternoon.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports. Police are investigating this case as murder. “Right now our focus is on preserving evidence and finding out what happened that led to the student being shot,” Ellington said. The relatives of the deceased also have to be informed. For this reason, it is not possible to share too much information at this time.” Toronto Police said that the suspected attacker had fled the area before the police arrived. No identity or description of the attacker has been released so far. The police investigation into the Highland Creek Valley area of UTSC is ongoing, the university said in a social media post. The roads leading to the valley are currently closed and people have been advised to stay away from the area until they are reopened by the police.
