India expresses serious concern over targeting of minorities in Bangladesh

New Delhi. India has expressed serious concern over the continuing incidents of atrocities by extremists against minorities including Hindus, Christians and Buddhists in Bangladesh. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday condemned the recent killing of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh and expressed hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

In the weekly press conference today, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal answered many questions related to the neighboring country. The spokesperson said that India is closely monitoring the developments in Bangladesh. Incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh cannot be ignored as media exaggeration or political violence. Over 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh were recorded by independent sources during the tenure of the interim government.

The spokesperson said that our stand on Bangladesh has been very clear and consistent from the beginning. India is in favor of strengthening relations with the people of Bangladesh. We want peace and stability in Bangladesh. We are in favor of free, fair, inclusive and participatory elections in Bangladesh in a peaceful environment.

On the return of BNP leader Tariq Rahman to Bangladesh after 17 years ahead of the elections, he said that we support free and fair elections in Bangladesh and this development should be seen in that context. At the same time, rejecting the false anti-India narrative being presented in Bangladesh, he reiterated that it is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to maintain law and order and security.
