  • Tragic plight of commuters on Christmas Day
  • IndiGo canceled 67 flights
  • Adverse effects on IndiGo flights due to fog

Indigo Airlines Crisis: Indigo Commuters’ problems show no signs of ending. Even on Christmas Day, on Thursday, IndiGo canceled 67 flights at several airports. The company cited bad weather and some operational reasons. It marks a continued period of trouble for the airline, which is already grappling with regulatory scrutiny and reduced schedules. According to information received, only four canceled flights were due to operational issues. Most of the remaining flights were canceled due to the threat of bad weather. The canceled airports include Agartala, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Varanasi and Bengaluru.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially declared the fog season. Then there is this new wave of flight cancellations. DGCA has fixed the fog season from December 10 to February 10. During this period, air traffic was frequently disrupted due to low visibility in the northern and eastern parts of the country.

Under the fog operations framework of DGCAairlines must be fully prepared for safe landings even in low visibility conditions. This requires pilots to be trained in CAT-IIIB operations and use aircraft compatible with Category-III landing systems. Category-III technology allows the aircraft to land even in dense fog. In Category-III-A, landing can be done even when the runway visibility range (RVR) is less than 200 m. Meanwhile, the more advanced Category III-B allows operations in visibility of less than 50 meters, which is common in dense winter fog.

While canceling the new flights, IndiGo said on its official social media platform X, “Flight schedules have been affected due to low visibility and fog in Bengaluru. We are closely monitoring the weather and doing our best to ensure your safe and smooth journey.” However, these instructions did not bring much relief to the angry commuters. Therefore, the angry passengers have demanded compensation. The ongoing incident has again raised questions about Indigo’s performance.
