Harsha Bhogle Reacts To 20 Wickets On Frenzy Day 1

Harsha Bhogle Reacts To 20 Wickets On Frenzy Day 1: It was wild; it was chaotic; it was a frenzy. Give whatever adjective you’d like, but day 1 of the Boxing Test of the Ashes 2025/26 at the MCG was simply unmissable as 20 wickets fell in a single day that ended up with Scott Boland nicking a boundary while opening with Travis Head in Australia’s second innings.

Although the Ashes 2025/26 had been decided, with Australia winning the first three Tests, the interest in the showpiece event of the Australian summer didn’t die down as Boxing Day offered plenty to talk about.

Amid the criticism and scrutiny Ben Duckett has received following his viral video of being inebriated while the England team was on a break at a resort in Noosa, the 4th Test of the AUS vs ENG Ashes series began on Friday with Ben Stokes winning the toss and electing to bowl first on a lively and spicy pitch in Melbourne.

Earlier, the pitch curator had hoped to produce a good Test cricket pitch, reflecting on the Australia vs India Test match last year that went into day 5.

However, the surface that was offered at the MCG was perhaps the most difficult to bat on in this series, even spicier than the one in Perth, as 20 wickets fell on day 1 with the pitch offering a significant amount of seam movement.

Only fast bowlers operated throughout the day. England bowled Australia out in 45.2 overs for 152 runs, with Josh Tongue taking a five-wicket haul; Brydon Carse, Ben Stokes, and Gus Atkinson shared four wickets, and Carse affected Cameron Green’s run out.

Australia went in with an all-pace attack and blasted England out for 110 runs in 29.5 overs. Michael Neser picked up 4/45, while the MCG local boy Scott Boland, at his home, returned with 3/30, Mitchell Starck took two scalps, and Green claimed one English victim.

The hosts took a lead of 42 runs and were required to bat one over at the end of the day’s play. Boland was sent in as a nightwatchman to open instead of Jake Weatherald. Head took the non-striker’s end promptly, and Boland faced all six balls from Atkinson, edging the last ball of the over for a boundary to the thirdman region as the Australian fans at the MCG cheered as loud as they could.

Australia ended day 1 at 4/0 in their second innings, leading by 46 runs.

Both teams getting bowled out on day 1 cannot be good for our game: Harsha Bhogle

Veteran Indian commentator and one of the most respected figures in the cricket fraternity, Harsha Bhogle reacted to the frenzied nature of play on day 1 of the AUS vs ENG MCG Test.

While Bhogle tacitly underlined the spicy character of the Melbourne pitch, he also opined that the falling of 20 wickets on day 1 of the Test match is not a good reflection of Test cricket.

Harsha Bhogle tweeted, “Whichever metric you choose to measure the game in, both teams getting bowled out on day 1 of a test match cannot be good for our game.”

Later, Bhogle also admitted that the last over of Friday’s play at the MCG was “captivating,” with Boland receiving huge applause.

He tweeted, “And yet, a no 11 trying to survive an over against the new ball on a treacherous pitch in front of 70k supporters is captivating drama.”
