Shakambhari Devi Navratri is celebrated starting from Ashtami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Paush month till Purnima Tithi. Thus this Navratri continues for eight days. At many places it is also associated with Shakambhari Jayanti. During this period, special worship, fasting and recitation of Goddess Shakambhari are done.

Method of worship of Shakambhari Devi

During Shakambhari Devi Navratri, devotees should take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Purify the place of worship with Ganga water and install the idol or picture of Goddess Shakambhari. Offering green clothes, green bangles and green chunari to the Goddess is considered especially fruitful. In the puja, green vegetables, fruits, grains, sesame seeds, jaggery and naivedya are offered to the goddess. Recite Durga Saptashati, Shakambhari Stotra and chant Devi Mantras. Many devotees also donate food and distribute food during this time, which is considered extremely auspicious.

Mythology of Shakambhari Devi

According to mythology, there was once a severe famine on earth. Due to lack of rain, grains, fruits and vegetables were destroyed. Both humans and gods became distressed due to hunger and distress. Then on the prayer of the Gods, Mother Durga incarnated in the form of Shakambhari Devi. The Goddess produced various types of vegetables, fruits and grains from her body and nourished the entire creation. For this reason she was called Shakambhari, that is, the goddess who nourishes the world with vegetables. The goddess also killed the demon Dushan and made the earth green again.
