The court has no right to harm my character.

Mehbooba Mufti’s statement on jail transfer

People’s Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti made an important comment regarding the transfer of prisoners from Jammu and Kashmir. He said on Friday that it was surprising for the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to reject his petition, which had sought to bring back local prisoners from jails elsewhere. This petition was rejected by the court saying that it was filed for political gain. Mehbooba called this decision unfortunate in a press conference held in Srinagar.

Mehbooba’s reaction on the court’s decision

Mehbooba Mufti said that the High Court says that any citizen can file a PIL, but since she is a political leader, her petition was looked at from a political perspective. “The High Court is not convinced that political leaders are deeply connected to the realities of the people,” he said. Mehbooba also raised the question as to why the court did not take suo motu cognizance of the case.

Due to Mehbooba’s displeasure

Mehbooba termed it inappropriate for the court to question her character. He also said that he has every right to raise political issues. He believes that the court should have asked the government how many undertrial prisoners are in the jails and what problems they are facing.

Comment on Kuldeep Singh Sengar case

Mehbooba Mufti also made it clear that her party will not remain silent on this issue. He said their demand was limited to transfer of only those prisoners who have not been convicted. In particular, regarding the suspension of sentence given by the court in the case of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Mehbooba alleged that the judiciary has been politicized. However, he also admitted that some judges still stand on the side of truth.
