Under-19 World Cup: Mhatre will be the captain of India in the Under-19 World Cup, Vaibhav Suryavanshi will lead the South Africa tour

Mumbai. Ayush Mhatre was on Saturday appointed the captain of the 15-member Indian team for the Under-19 World Cup to be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia from January 15 to February 6. However, due to wrist injuries, Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra will not be able to take part in the three-match ODI series against South Africa before the World Cup.

In his absence, rising batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi will captain the Indian team on the South Africa tour. The matches on this tour will be played in Benoni on January 3, 5 and 7. Aaron George has been made the vice-captain. Mhatre and Malhotra will report to the ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Bengaluru for treatment and management of their injuries after which they will join the Indian team. Suryavanshi and George have also been included in the Under-19 World Cup team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement, “Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra have suffered wrist injuries and will be out of the South Africa tour. The statement further said, “Both players will report to the BCCI Center of Excellence for further management of their injuries and will then join the squad for the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup. ”16 teams will participate in the upcoming phase of the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, which have been divided into four groups. After this, the Super Six stage, semi-finals and final will be played in Harare.

Five-time champions India (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022) have been placed in Group B along with New Zealand, USA and Bangladesh. India will begin their campaign against USA on January 15 at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo. After this, there will be a match against Bangladesh on the same ground on 17th January and against New Zealand on 24th January. The teams are as follows:
