Shefali Verma’s stormy innings did two wonders together, breaking Jemimah Rodriguez’s record and leaving Mithali Raj behind.

In this match played at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, 26 December, the Sri Lankan team, which came to bat first after losing the toss, had a very poor start. Captain Chamari Atapattu returned to the pavilion after scoring only 3 runs, while Harshita Samarawickrama could also score only 2 runs. After the initial shock, Sri Lanka’s innings came under pressure.

Opener Hasini Perera struggled for some time after scoring 25 runs, but could not play a long innings. In the middle order, Imesha Dulani (27 runs) and Kavisha Dilhari (20 runs) struggled for some time, while in the last overs, Kaushani Nuthyangana made some contributions with the bat by adding 19 not out in 16 balls. The Indian team did not face much trouble while chasing the target. After the early dismissals of Smriti Mandhana (1) and Jemimah Rodriguez (9), Shefali Verma took over at one end. He played an explosive inning of 79 not out in 42 balls, which included 11 fours and 3 sixes.

With this inning, Shefali Verma left Mithali Raj behind in terms of scoring the most runs in Women’s T20 International. Mithali had scored 2364 runs in 89 matches, while Shefali crossed this figure in 92 matches. With 2378 runs, Shefali has now reached the fourth position in the list of batsmen who have scored the most runs in Women’s T20 International for India. In this list, Smriti Mandhana (4022 runs), Harmanpreet Kaur (3700 runs) and Jemimah Rodriguez (2479 runs) are ahead of her.

Not only this, Shefali also broke Jemimah Rodriguez’s record. The record of becoming the batsman making the highest individual score for India in Women’s T20 International cricket against Sri Lanka has now been registered in the name of Shefali Verma. Jemima played an inning of 76 runs in 53 balls against Sri Lanka in Sylhet on 1 October 2022. Shefali has also made this record in her name by playing an unbeaten inning of 79 runs.
