Severe cold on New Year, alert from Delhi-NCR to Jammu-Kashmir
Even before the arrival of the new year 2026, the effect of severe cold has started becoming visible in India. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of cold wave and dense fog in many states including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Weather Forecast: Get ready for the harsh winter on New Year, because the year is going to start with severe cold. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert of severe cold in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir. An alert of dense fog and cold wave has also been issued in these states.
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of dense to very dense fog in Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh. Apart from this, there is a possibility of cold wave in some areas of North Rajasthan and Jharkhand on December 28.
Cold and fog wreak havoc in Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh
There is a possibility of moderate to dense fog in Delhi and NCR in the morning on 28th December. The minimum temperature is expected to be between 5 to 8 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is expected to be between 21 to 23 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has advised drivers to use fog lights and be alert in fog.
Along with cold, dense fog will also be seen in Uttar Pradesh. There is no possibility of sunshine before morning, due to which severe cold will be felt. Cold day alert has been issued in 35 districts of the state. A red alert has been issued for cold day in some districts of western UP and extreme cold day in some areas of eastern UP. Dense fog is expected in many districts including Deoria, Gorakhpur, Basti, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Gonda.
Weather in Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir
There is an alert of severe cold and dense fog in Punjab and Haryana. Ballowal Saunkhari in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar has been described as the coldest place in Punjab, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.4°C. Amritsar recorded temperatures of 5.1°C, Ludhiana 4.6°C, Patiala 7°C, Pathankot 5.4°C, Bathinda 6°C, Faridkot 4.9°C and Gurdaspur 5.8°C. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh is around 6.9°C.
Due to clear sky in Kashmir, the temperature has dropped and the night temperature has gone below zero at many places. The minimum temperature was -2.6°C in Srinagar and -5.8°C in Sonamarg. The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall around the New Year. There is a possibility of light rain or snowfall in some areas on December 30, while snowfall may occur at many places on December 31 and January 1.
Cold and fog in Odisha
The effect of cold wave continues in many parts of Odisha. Temperatures were recorded below 10°C at 11 places. Koraput was the coldest place of the day in the state. The minimum temperature in Kandhamal district was recorded at 6.5°C in Daringbadi, Jharsuguda 7.2°C, Phulbani 7.5°C, Udayagiri 7.8°C, Rourkela 8°C, Kirei 8.3°C, Nabarangpur 8.5°C, Sundergarh 9°C and Bhawanipatna 9.8°C. Dense fog is expected in Khurda, Puri and Jagatsinghpur on 29 and 30 December.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal
The weather will be mainly dry over Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas. Night temperatures in the higher reaches of Nilgiri and Dindigul are likely to be 2-3°C below normal. Light mist and fog may prevail in the morning. Day temperature in Chennai and surrounding cities will be around 30-31°C and night temperature will be around 23°C.
