Shreyas Iyer started batting in the nets after injury, know when will he return to the team?
Indian ODI team’s vice-captain and strong middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer is moving fast towards recovery from injury. After a long time, he was seen batting in the nets, which has raised hopes among the fans about his comeback. His practice, which is being done under the strict supervision of the BCCI medical team, is showing positive signs.
Shreyas Iyer returned to the nets
Shreyas Iyer had his first full batting session in Mumbai in December, where he swung the bat for about an hour without any pain. After this he has reached BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru. Here they are undergoing high level fitness testing and practice. In the nets, he hit some brilliant shots with light practice, which shows a glimpse of his old rhythm.
Interestingly, he was seen wearing protective gear on the part where the injury occurred in the match against Australia. This caution is part of his complete recovery process.

How did Iyer get hurt?
Iyer suffered this injury in the Sydney ODI match against Australia in October 2025. While fielding, he fell while taking the catch of Alex Carey, due to which there was serious damage to the internal organ of the stomach, the spleen, and internal bleeding started. After treatment, he stayed away from cricket for several months.
Due to this injury, he also missed the ODI series against South Africa and the opening match of Vijay Hazare Trophy. Now his scan reports are showing improvement, and doctors have allowed him to gradually start exercising.
Possibility of comeback in New Zealand series
The three-match ODI series between India and New Zealand is starting from 11 January 2026. The team is expected to be announced in the first week of January. Shreyas’s recovery is fast, but BCCI does not want to rush anything. The final decision on his fitness will be taken only after 4-6 days of investigation at the Center of Excellence. At present, his entry in the New Zealand series seems difficult, because the entire focus is on his complete recovery.
If all goes well, then he can play in the last stages of Vijay Hazare Trophy, which will further strengthen the path of comeback in Team India. Shreyas’s return will strengthen the Indian middle order, as he has the ability to win matches at number-4.
