New Delhi: Kalvari class submarine, showing the strength of Indian Navy, is now in the news again. President Draupadi Murmu will board the submarine and give it a “sea-sortie” at the Naval Base in Kanwar today, December 28. It is one of India’s indigenous submarines and incorporates modern technology, which makes it extremely dangerous for the enemies.
Salient Features of Kalvari Class Submarine
- Espionage and covert operations: The Kalvari class submarine is designed to evade enemy radar and carry out covert missions. It has advanced acoustic silencing technology, due to which it does not make any sound in water and the enemy does not know where it is.
- Attack Ability: This submarine is capable of carrying out dangerous attacks. It has an anti-torpedo countermeasures system, six 533 mm torpedo tubes, the ability to launch 18 SUT torpedoes or SM-39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. Apart from this, it is also capable of laying 30 sea mines.
- Long Duty and Depth: The Kalvari class submarine can stay underwater for up to 50 days and operate at a depth of 350 feet. 8 military officers and 35 sailors can be deployed in it.
- Speed and Distance: The speed of this submarine is 20 km/hr on the surface and 37 km/hr underwater. If it moves at a speed of 15 km/h on the surface, it can travel up to 12,000 kilometers.
- Advanced Monitoring Tools: The submarine has an attack-and-search periscope, which is equipped with an infrared camera, low light level camera and laser range finder. These devices help in detecting targets on the sea surface and further strengthen covert surveillance.
President’s experience in defense sector
President Draupadi Murmu has been involved in defense sector activities in the past also. Last year she had gone to the Navy’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. Apart from this, in October 2025, he also flew in Air Force fighter jet Rafale. Now she will experience the strength and technological advancement of the Indian Navy by taking a ride in the Kalvari class submarine.
INS Kalvari is an indigenously built submarine. It was constructed at Mazagon Docks Limited, Mumbai, a shipyard owned by the Ministry of Defence. The construction also received technology transfer and technical assistance from the French defense group DCNS. The collaboration between DCNS and Mazagon Docks in design and construction makes it state-of-the-art and reliable.
Other acclaimed Kalvari class submarine units include INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, INS Vela, INS Vagir. These submarines play an important role in the strategic strength of India’s naval forces and are capable of dodging the enemy, gathering intelligence and establishing sea control.
