The first match of Bangladesh Premier League was to be played on 27 December between Rajshahi Warriors and Dhaka Capitals at Sylhet International Stadium. Before the match, the Dhaka Capitals team was practicing on the field and Mehboob Ali Zaki was present with the team. During this time, he suddenly fell unconscious on the field, which created panic among the team players and support staff.

Health deteriorated suddenly, died in hospital

According to ESPN Cricinfo, Mehboob also took part in the pre-match drill and talked to the players about the team’s preparations. The practice session was nearing its end, during which he suddenly fainted. The medical team present on the spot immediately gave him first aid and CPR was also done. After this, he was hurriedly taken to the hospital from Sylhet International Stadium, but after reaching the hospital, the doctors could not save him.

BCB expressed deep condolences

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) expressed deep grief over the demise of Mehboob Ali Zaki through social media. The board said in its statement that 59-year-old Mahboob Ali Zaki, specialist pace bowling coach of the BCB Game Development Department and assistant coach of Dhaka Capitals, died in Sylhet at around 1 pm on December 27, 2025.

BCB said that his dedication and contribution to the development of fast bowling and Bangladesh cricket will always be remembered with respect and gratitude. The Board expressed its deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire cricket fraternity in this difficult time.

Dhaka Capitals also made an emotional post

The Dhaka Capitals franchise also shared a condolence message on its official social media handle. The team wrote that it is with great sadness that this information is being given that the beloved assistant coach of the Dhaka Capitals family has left this world after suffering from heart disease. This is an irreparable loss for us and we are deeply shocked by this grief. The team also expressed heartfelt condolences to his family.

Special contribution for Bangladesh cricket

Mehboob Ali Zaki had played many important roles with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He was a mentor to many young players and under his coaching many talents traveled to the international level. He also coached the Bangladesh Under-19 team and was an important part of the team that won the Under-19 World Cup in 2020. His demise is being considered a big loss for Bangladesh cricket.
