We are Indians, not Chinese… Before dying, Tripura student had said this, 6 people attacked him by calling him Chinki

A very sad incident has happened in Dehradun. Anjell Chakma, a 24-year-old young student from Tripura died. Anjel was studying MBA and lived with his younger brother Michael in Dehradun. Both brothers were studying there for more than a year. It all started on the evening of 9 December 2025. Angel and Michael had gone to buy groceries at a local market in Selaqui area of Dehradun. This was a common thing, but there some local boys stopped him and started abusing him racially. They started teasing them by calling them derogatory words like ‘Chinese’, ‘Nepali’, ‘Chinki’ and ‘Momos’. These people were under the influence of alcohol.

Angel protested peacefully but firmly. He said, ‘We are not Chinese, we are Indians. Which certificate will we have to show to prove this?’ But these words were answered with abuses and violence. Those boys first injured Michael by hitting him on the head with an iron bangle. When Anjell came to save his brother, the main accused stabbed Anjell several times with a knife. The knife hit the neck, stomach, back and spine, causing serious injuries to Angel.

A friend of Angel told that Angel was a very calm and friendly person. They never quarreled. All his friends and family are very sad and angry due to this incident. Angel’s body was brought to Agartala, where people’s anger flared up in Tripura.

Attacking Chinese is wrong

Tipra Motha Party Chairman Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma helped the family a lot. He made arrangements from treatment to bringing the dead body. He said, ‘It is very sad that the patriotic people of the North-East are attacked by calling them Chinese. Those who use racist abuses forget that it is the brave people of the North-East who stop the Chinese from entering the country. Such incidents not only hurt families but also divide the entire country. If we are divided we will be weak, we want justice.

This is a huge tragedy

Suraj Debbarma, president of the youth wing of Tipra Motha, said, ‘People from the North-East are often victims of racial abuses and attacks in North India. But when students from North India come to study in the North-East, we welcome them like our brothers. It is a huge tragedy that we lost an innocent life in a crime of hate. The police registered a case on December 12 on Michael’s complaint. Five of the six accused were arrested on 14 December. Among them are two minors, the main accused Yagya Awasthi (or Yagya Awasthi) has fled to Nepal. The police have announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for him and have sent two teams to nab him.

Demand for national law against hatred

Initially the case was registered under sections of causing hurt and intimidation. Later the section of attempt to murder was added. After Angel’s death, sections of murder and gang crime have now been imposed. There is anger in the North-East due to this incident, people are demanding a national law against racial hatred. Students are protesting in colleges of Dehradun and North-East. Everyone is demanding justice so that such incidents do not happen again. This incident forces us to think why people from one part of the country become victims of insult and danger in another part just because of their appearance. Youth like Angel go to other cities for studies, but they have to face such hatred. It is hoped that the accused will get strict punishment and a safe environment will be created for the people of the North East.
