Australia Face Major Setback as Tim David Suffers Hamstring Injury

The Australian team is getting ready for the T20 World Cup 2026 but a worrying setback has come in the form of another hamstring injury to the power batter Tim David. The injury occurred during a match in the Big Bash League (BBL) between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Perth Scorchers on Friday, December 26.
Tim David was batting brilliantly and had amassed a total of 42 runs off just 28 deliveries. Nonetheless, he suddenly experienced a spasm in his hamstring while running between the wickets. He was very clearly upset and in pain, so after a consultation with the medical team, he decided to leave the ground.
Tim David’s third hamstring injury
Later, David shared that while he was running for the second one, he felt something and didn’t want to take the risk of pushing himself further and making the injury worse.
“I just felt a little bit of something when I was trying to come back for two. It’s not ideal, but I didn’t want to make it worse and had full faith in the boys to get us home. We’ll wait and see,” David told Channel 7.
This injury is particularly alarming because it is the second time during the year that David has had a hamstring injury. He earlier sustained a very bad hamstring sprain during the IPL in 2025. This injury ruled him out of almost two months of cricket during which he missed RCB’s strong playoff run as well.
The team was very careful about his recovery and he returned only later during Australia’s T20I series against West Indies. Even then, he was only able to play three out of the five matches.
Nathan Ellis shares feelings of concern about a teammate’s injury
At the same time, the captain of Hobart Hurricanes Nathan Ellis disclosed that he was “shattered” by the news.
“You know, I’d behe would be wrong not to say there are a few of us that have one eye on the World Cup as well,” Ellis stated. “So, as a friend, first and foremost, I am shattered that he (the player) might miss the games with the Hurricanes.”
“But I am pretty sure that we will take all the proper steps, and hopefully, potentially, we might get him back for the end of the tournament… and even more so with the Australian colors in the World Cup,” he continued.
The event is to be held from February 7, 2026, and India and Sri Lanka are the chosen venues. The medical team’s monitoring of Davids’ situation will be very close since the T20 World Cup is just around the corner.
The Hurricanes stated that David would be going through scans to determine how serious the injury is. The findings will be instrumental in deciding His period of inactivity.
Why Tim David’s injury is a setback for the Australian team
Tim David’s role in the Australian squad can’t be overemphasized as he is a hitter who can turn the game around with his T20 batting and match-winning potential. His T20I numbers for the year 2025 have been amazing as he has been able to score 395 runs in 10 innings with a strike rate close to 200, during which he hit a total of 36 sixes.
With the Australian middle order being out of form and the others being injury-prone, the upcoming World Cup would necessitate David’s fitness.
