In a report released today, the company discovered that its AI models were used to create fake content, such as long articles and social media comments, that were intended to influence the election. These AI generated messages can mimic the style of real news sources, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to distinguish between truth and falsehood.
The most worrying aspect is that cyber criminals can use data mining techniques to analyze voter behavior and preferences and craft messages that appeal to them. OpenAI has foiled more than 20 attempts to use ChatGPT this year. In August, the company blocked accounts that created election-related articles.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also expressed concern that Russia, Iran, and China are attempting to influence the upcoming November elections through AI-powered content and disinformation. These countries are accused of using AI to spread fake or divisive information, which poses serious threats to elections.
