Birth centenary of freedom fighter Parvati Giri will be celebrated in January: PM Modi announced
Bhubaneswar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced that the birth centenary of freedom fighter Parvati Giri will be celebrated next month. PM Modi also paid tribute to Giri, a native of Odisha, for her dedication towards the freedom struggle and social reform. Modi took Giri’s name in the last ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program of the year.
Modi said people from every part of the country contributed to the freedom movement, but unfortunately many heroes, be they men or women, did not get the respect they deserved. He said, “Parvati Giri ji of Odisha is one such freedom fighter. His birth centenary will be celebrated in January 2026. He participated in the Quit India Movement at the age of 16. After the freedom struggle, Parvati Giri ji dedicated her life to social service and tribal welfare.
“She established many orphanages. Her inspirational life will continue to guide every generation. I pay tribute to Parvati Giri,” the Prime Minister said. He said that the country will celebrate the 77th Republic Day next month, and whenever such occasions come, people’s hearts are filled with gratitude towards the freedom fighters and the makers of the Constitution. The Prime Minister said that it is the responsibility of the countrymen not to forget their heritage.
“We have to pass on to the next generation the great story of those heroes, be they men or women, who brought us freedom,” he said. Modi said when India celebrated the 75th anniversary of independence, the government created a special website and had a section dedicated to ‘unsung heroes’. Modi said, “By visiting this website one can know about those great personalities who played an important role in getting independence for our country.”

Later, she dedicated her life to social service and tribal welfare.” Born on January 19, 1926 in present-day Bargarh district, Giri was jailed for two years for anti-colonial activities.
He was jailed for two years at the age of 16 for his participation in Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India Movement. He left school after the third class and visited villages to spread awareness among the people on the call of Mahatma Gandhi. As per official records, after independence, she enrolled at Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth in Prayagraj in 1950 to complete her schooling.
