Kartikeya was the son of Parvati, then why is his mother called Krittika?

In Hindu religion, the status of a mother is not limited to giving birth only, but the mother who nurtures the child is also given equal respect. Many examples of this are found in religious beliefs. Lord Shri Krishna is considered to be the son of both Devaki and Yashoda. Devaki gave birth to him while Yashoda brought him up. Similarly, Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, is also said to be the son not only of Parvati but also of the Krittikas. The mythology behind it makes this belief clear.

Everyone knows the story of Lord Krishna’s birth and his upbringing, but very few people know that Kartikeya is also considered to be the son of two goddesses. Our religious stories explain the reasons for this belief in detail.

birth story

The story of Kartikeya’s birth is described as amazing in Hindu scriptures, especially Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana. It is believed that he had not one but many mothers. The goddesses of Krittika Nakshatra are considered his mothers, because they were the ones who brought up the child Kartikeya.

According to mythology, Tarakasura could only be killed by a child born from Shiva’s radiance but Shiva’s radiance was so strong that no normal womb was capable of bearing him.

First of all, Agni Dev took hold of that flame but as he could not bear its power, he released it into the Ganga. Mother Ganga left that glory near a lake situated in a forest named Sharvan. From that radiance a very beautiful child was born, who was called Kartikeya.

sons of krittikas

At the same time when the child appeared in that lake, six Krittikas came there to take bath. Krittikas are considered to be the presiding deities of the constellations. Seeing the child alone, her heart swelled with love and she could not stop herself. She took him in her lap and started taking care of him like her own child. All the goddesses looked after Parvati’s son with love.

When Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva came to know about their son, they rushed there to take him. Seeing this, Kritika became very sad, because during the upbringing she had developed a deep attachment to the child. Then Parvati, pleased with their love, honored the Krittikas and announced that the child would be known as Kartikeya and she would always be remembered in the world as his mother.
