BCCI’s clarification on Gautam Gambhir’s coaching
New Delhi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified its position on the ongoing speculation regarding head coach Gautam Gambhir. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has said that all the discussions about removing Gambhir from the post of coach are baseless. Recently, there were reports that former Indian batsman VVS Laxman was being talked about as the new coach after the Test series defeat against South Africa.
Gambhir’s record and coaching challenges
Gautam Gambhir has an excellent record in limited overs cricket, and under his leadership the team has won the ICC trophy once and the ACC trophy once. But the defeat in 10 consecutive test matches against military countries in red ball cricket has raised questions about his coaching style. Reports suggested that a senior BCCI official had held informal discussions with Laxman, but it was not possible to ascertain whether he was interested in becoming the coach of the red-ball team. However, Laxman has expressed satisfaction at his current post at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
BCCI’s clear stand
Secretary Devjit Saikia completely rejected these speculations and said, “This news is absolutely wrong. All these things are based on mere speculations. Some reputed news agencies are also spreading such news, but there is no basis in it. BCCI has not taken any action.” Thus, BCCI has made it clear that Gambhir has full support.
Gambhir’s contract and upcoming series
Gambhir’s contract is till 2027 ODI World Cup. However, discussions are ongoing whether he is suitable for the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle or not. India recently leveled the Test series against England 2-2. The Indian team is scheduled to play Test matches against Sri Lanka in 2026 and New Zealand in October, followed by a series against Australia in January-February 2027.
