Story behind Children’s Day

Raja Bhim Chand of Bilaspur had waged a war against the 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh in the beginning of the 17th century. For this, Bhim Chand had joined hands with Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb ordered the Nawabs of Delhi, Sirhind and Lahore to attack the fort of Guru Gobind Singh with their entire armies. Seeing the increasing danger, Guru Gobind Singh ji divided his army into six parts. Sikh soldiers fought bravely against the Mughal army and Bhim Chand’s army. At the beginning of the war, Guru Gobind Singh’s army overpowered the enemies. As soon as the Mughal soldiers advanced towards the fort, they were attacked with cannons.

A few days after the battle, Sikh soldiers came out of the fort and attacked the enemy army. Guru Gobind Singh himself had also participated in this attack but Bhim Chand’s son had recognized him. On this the Mughal army announced that any soldier who attacks Guru Gobind Singh Ji will be given a reward. The Mughals started the siege of the fort after being defeated by the Sikh soldiers.

Mughals betrayed

When the Mughals started becoming weak in the war, they started laying siege to the fort. After several months of siege, there was a shortage of food items inside the fort and the soldiers were on the verge of dying of hunger. After this, Ajmer Chand wrote a letter to Guru Hobind Singh that if he left Anandpur Sahib, he would be allowed to go without any harm. Guru Gobind Singh was skeptical about this proposal but his mother Gujri convinced him. Guru Gobind Singh said that he was ready to leave but first his valuables should be allowed to be taken out in bullock carts. After this, all the valuables of the people of Anandpur were sent on bullock carts. The Mughals betrayed Guru Gobind Singh and looted all his valuables.

After this Guru Gobind Singh ji had to leave Anandpur but the Mughals also attacked him on the banks of Sirsa river. Guru Gobind Singh was separated from his family in this battle. His two elder Sahibzades, Ajit Singh and Jhujhar Singh, were martyred in the battle, while Mughal soldiers arrested his mother Gujri and the two younger Sahibzades.

Mughals got elected in the living wall

Mata Gujri and two younger Sahibzadas were arrested by the Mughal army and presented in the court. At that time both of them were very young, Zorawar Singh was 7 years old and Fateh Singh was 5 years old. On 26 December 1705, the Mughal commander Wazir Khan proposed that their lives would be spared if both of them accepted Islam. On hearing this, both the Sahibzadas raised slogans of ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal, Sat Shri Akal’. Hearing this, Wazir Khan got angry. On the same day, Wazir Khan had both of them buried alive in the wall. Both Sahibzadas lost their lives by abandoning their religion and accepting Islam. He is still remembered for his bravery.
