England registers Test win in Australia after 14 years, wins match by 4 wickets in Melbourne
Tezzbuzz Desk- In the fourth Test of the five-match Ashes series being played between Australia and England, England won the target of 175 runs in the second innings by losing six wickets. However, this victory had no impact on the series as Australia took an unassailable 3–0 lead by winning the first three Tests.
This victory holds special significance for England, because they succeeded in winning the Test match in Australia after 14 years and 11 months. The last time England won a Test in Australia was in January 2011. Since then, the Australian team has continuously defeated or drawn England at home. Australia made consecutive Ashes whitewashes at home in 2013/14, 2017/18 and 2021/22.
This victory broke England’s streak of 18 consecutive defeats on Australian soil. This win for the team is a first for all the players, but for captain Ben Stokes and Joe Root it is also the experience of the first Test win in Australia.
On the first day of the match, Ben Stokes won the toss and decided to bowl first, which the England bowlers proved right. Australia’s first innings was bundled out for 152 runs. In reply, England’s first innings was reduced to just 110 runs, giving Australia a lead of 42 runs.
Australia’s second innings was all out for 132 runs, leaving England with a target of 175 runs. The English batsmen achieved this target by losing six wickets.
Australian batting was poor, especially in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, as the Steve Smith-led side looked weak. Michael Neser made the biggest contribution by scoring 35 runs, while captain Smith was out for just 9 runs.
For England, Josh Tongue took five wickets, Gus Atkinson took two and Brydon Carse and captain Stokes took one wicket each.
With this victory, England gained confidence after a long time on Australian soil and have started preparations to reverse their defeat in the series.
