President Droupadi Murmu experiences the thrill of a submarine; A historic cruise from ‘INS Waghsheer’

INS Waghshir Submarine: President of India and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Mrs. Draupadi Murmu Today they are on a tour of Karnataka. From Karwar Naval Base, by Draupadi Murmu of the Indian Navy An indigenously developed Kalvari-class submarine, INS Wagashir made a historic voyage to the West Coast. On this important occasion, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi was with the President. President Draupadi Murmu’s visit is historic in many ways. She became the first president to travel on a Calvary-class submarine. Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had previously traveled on a submarine. This is the second submarine trip by any president.

The highlights of this submarine?

INS Wagashir is a state-of-the-art Kalvari-class diesel-electric attack submarine built under Project 75. It is a powerful symbol of Indian Navy’s submarine capability, self-reliant India and Make in India initiatives. The submarine is capable of undersea covert operations, surveillance, intelligence gathering and effective action against enemy ships and submarines.

Technical efficiency of the submarine

President Murmu’s visit will enhance the Indian Navy’s courage, technological efficiency and professional commitment. This further strengthens the top leadership’s confidence and support for the armed forces.

Dr. Kalam INS Sindhu was seated as a spectator

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam became the first head of state to travel by submarine. On 13 February 2006, Dr. Kalam spent several hours on board the submarine at Visakhapatnam, under the Eastern Naval Command in the Bay of Bengal. He was accompanied by the then Navy chief Arun Prakash. This submarine was commanded by Commander PS Bisht. After this meeting, Dr. Kalam said, “It was my first experience of traveling in a submarine. I got to know how this silent army of the Indian Navy works underwater.”
