AAP expresses concern over changes in MNREGA, claims impact on employment of poor

Punjab News: Aam Aadmi Party has expressed serious concern about the recent changes made in MNREGA. Party MLA and chief spokesperson of Punjab Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that MNREGA is a lifeline for crores of poor and labor families of the country and any change in it directly affects their employment and livelihood.

There will be additional burden on the states- Dhaliwal

During the press conference on Sunday, Dhaliwal said that under MNREGA, earlier there was a provision of 100 percent funding by the central government, due to which the development works in the states and villages ran smoothly. But now under the new system, the funding has been divided in the ratio of 60-40, that is, 60 percent amount will have to be given by the Center and 40 percent amount will have to be given to the states. He said that this will put additional financial burden on the states and MNREGA work may be affected.

What other problems are there due to changes in MNREGA?

The AAP leader said that the economic condition of the states is already challenging. In such a situation, it will not be easy to raise additional 40 percent amount. This will have a direct impact on the work provided under MNREGA and workers will not be able to get employment on time. He also expressed concern that under the new system, MNREGA works are being limited during the agricultural season, due to which landless laborers may face livelihood crisis.

MNREGA is not a dole

Dhaliwal said that earlier there was a guarantee of 100 days of work under MNREGA and workers could work as per their need. But now questions are being raised on this guarantee also. He said that MNREGA is not a dole, rather it is the right of workers and its objective is to promote employment and development in rural areas.

The role of local bodies will be weakened

The AAP leader also said that gram panchayats, block committees and district councils had been strengthened through MNREGA. Roads, ponds, canals and other development works in villages were done under this scheme. The new system may weaken the role of local bodies.

MNREGA should be implemented basically

In the end, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that Aam Aadmi Party will continue to raise its voice strongly to protect the interests of laborers and the poor. The party believes that MNREGA should be implemented in its original form so that the poor families of rural India can get secure employment.
