Umpires’ salary has not increased for 7 years, big disclosure regarding 186 umpires of BCCI

Tezzbuzz Desk- The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has continuously increased the salaries and facilities of players in the last few years. There has been an increase in the earnings of players at every level, from international to domestic cricket, men and women, which has been appreciated by cricket experts all over the world. But meanwhile there is one important aspect where there has been no change for a long time. This aspect is the salary of umpires under BCCI.

According to a report, a total of 186 umpires are currently working under BCCI. The salary of these umpires has remained the same for the last seven years. That is, while there was an increase in the players’ contracts and match fees, there was no increase in the umpires’ income.

The Indian domestic cricket season remains busy almost throughout the year. Recently Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy were organized, after which Vijay Hazare Trophy is now being played. After its conclusion the second phase of Ranji Trophy will start. Apart from this, senior women’s ODI and T20 tournaments, as well as many junior level matches are also organised. The responsibility of umpiring in all these matches rests with these 186 umpires.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the BCCI has divided umpires into four categories—A+, A, B and C—just like the grade system for players.

A+ Category- 9 Umpires

A Category- 20 umpires

B Category- 58 Umpires

C Category- 99 Umpires

Talking about salary, A+ and A category umpires get Rs 40,000 per day. Whereas B and C category umpires are paid Rs 30,000 per day. The surprising thing is that this rate has not changed for the last seven years.

It has also been told in the report that the BCCI Umpires Committee had sent some important recommendations to the Apex Council of the Board. It was suggested that instead of four categories, only two categories should be kept and all the umpires should be paid equally Rs 40,000 per day.

However, at present BCCI has not taken any final decision on this proposal. The board has said that a separate committee will be formed on this issue, which will present its report in the next Apex Council meeting.

Now it remains to be seen when and what decision BCCI takes on the long pending salary increase of umpires. This decision is considered very important for the umpires, who are considered the backbone of domestic cricket.
