New year begins with fog, orange alert in 7 states and red alert in UP
These days the weather has taken a sudden turn in North India. Severe cold and dense fog have started adversely affecting life. Visibility has become extremely low in many areas during morning and night hours, due to which the common people as well as the transport services are facing huge problems. The Meteorological Department has issued red, orange and yellow alerts for many states regarding fog.
Very dense fog in eight states
Dense to very dense fog was seen in at least eight states of North India on Sunday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the fog situation remains very severe in eastern and western Uttar Pradesh, due to which a red alert has been issued for these areas. There are less chances of getting relief from cold and fog in these areas in the coming days.
According to the latest forecast of the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of dense to very dense fog in the morning and night in Himachal Pradesh till December 30, while in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh till December 31. Apart from this, foggy conditions may persist in Jammu Division, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Odisha till the first day of January.

Cold day conditions have been predicted in some parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. There has been a warning of cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Orange alert has been issued for Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and some states of the North-East, including the capital Delhi, while yellow alert is in force in many states including Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
Cold outbreak in Punjab and Haryana
The outbreak of cold continues in Punjab and Haryana. The minimum temperature recorded in Hisar, Haryana was 2.5 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest in the state. The temperature in Chandigarh was also recorded below normal. Visibility remained very low in both the states due to dense fog in the morning.
The dense fog has also had a direct impact on rail and air services. Dozens of trains are running late in North India, while many flights have also been delayed. Flight operations were affected in many cities including Delhi. Due to the combined effect of fog and pollution, visibility further reduced, due to which the passengers had to face a lot of problems. Airlines and Railways Department have appealed to the passengers to check the status of their train and flight before travelling.
