Gus Atkinson Set to Miss 5th Ashes Test Due to Hamstring Injury

In a regrettable incident, England’s primary pacer Gus Atkinson had to deal with a hamstring injury during the ongoing Boxing Day Test against Australia in the Ashes 2025-26. Earlier, Gus Atkinson managed to bowl five overs in Australia’s second innings, after which he was unable to continue because of the hamstring injury.
Gus Atkinson injury walks off the field midway in MCG Test
Since his Test debut in July last year, Gus Atkinson has been an indispensable part of England’s Test team. The right-arm speedster was fantastic in the first innings of the MCG Test, as England restricted Australia to a meager total of 152 runs. Atkinson was able to take advantage of the seam-friendly conditions of the MCG pitch by taking the major wickets of Travis Head and Usman Khawaja and giving away only 28 runs in his fourteen-over spell.
But the England pacer was not able to achieve a similar level of success in the second innings and his hamstring injury put a quick end to his participation. Gus Atkinson felt discomfort in his left hamstring right after completing his fifth over and eventually left the field on the second day of the Boxing Day Test.
Gus Atkinson exited the ground following his fifth over this morning, noticing some pain in his left hamstring. The player will undergo tests in a few hours. “Wishing you the best, Gus,” the ECB communicated in its statement.
Atkinson joins the never-ending list of England fast bowlers who are injured during the Ashes
First, the knee injury has ruled out the fast bowler Mark Wood from participating in the Ashes 2025-26 with his long-time bowling partner Jofra Archer getting sidelined too after just one series of Tests.
Thus, England’s already severe worries regarding their fast bowlers are even more pronounced now with Atkison’s future in question for the final Test in Sydney.
Who are the potential replacements for Atkinson if he gets ruled out for SCG Test?
A decision regarding Gus Atkinson’s participation in the final Ashes Test at the SCG will be made after the injury has been evaluated as per the ECB. If he gets dropped, either Matthew Fisher or Matthew Potts could be joining Josh Tongue, Brydon Carse, and captain Ben Stokes as England’s pacers in the dead-rubber.
