Complete timeline of Kuldeep Singh Sengar case, from stay on sentence to bail… know what has happened so far?

In fact, after the High Court stayed the sentence of Kuldeep Sengar, the victim remained on strike in Delhi. Within no time, this matter once again became a topic of discussion in the entire country and the victim also started getting support during the protest. After the Unnao incident, Kuldeep Sengar was sentenced to life imprisonment. But the matter changed again after the High Court stayed the sentence. Let us tell you what actions and decisions have been taken in this case from beginning to end.

1. In 2017, politics was shaken by the Makhi rape case.

A 17-year-old girl from Makhi police station area, who described herself as a minor, had alleged that on June 4, 2017, Kuldeep Singh Sengar called her to his residence on the pretext of getting her a job and raped her. The victim said that after the incident, she reached Makhi police station with her family, but due to the influence of the MLA, the police did not register a case.

2. No action taken for months

Despite continuous complaints from the victim and her family, no concrete action was taken from June 2017 to March 2018. It is alleged that despite several appeals from the local level to Lucknow, the matter was kept suppressed.

3. Accusation of beating father and sending him to jail

On April 3, 2018, the victim’s father was assaulted. The family alleged that under the influence of Kuldeep Sengar, the police instead sent the victim’s father to jail. After a few days the matter became more serious.

4. Attempt to commit suicide in front of CM residence

On April 8, 2018, the victim tried to commit suicide by pouring petrol on herself outside the Chief Minister’s residence in Lucknow. Due to this the matter suddenly came into limelight across the country. The victim and her family said that despite running from the local police station to the police headquarters, no hearing was held, after which she reached Delhi and warned of self-immolation.

5. FIR and death in father’s custody

As the matter gained momentum, the first FIR was registered on 8-9 April 2018. Meanwhile, on April 9, 2018, the victim’s father was arrested in the Arms Act case. The family called it an act of revenge. His condition deteriorated after the alleged beating in jail and he died on 10 April 2018 after being admitted to the hospital. After this the matter reached to rape as well as custodial death and conspiracy.

6. High Court’s question: “Is the MLA above the law?”

Amidst the atmosphere of anger across the country, Allahabad High Court on 11 April 2018 sought answers from the Uttar Pradesh government and asked “Is the MLA above the law?” After this a CBI inquiry was ordered. On 13 April 2018, the High Court directed for the immediate arrest of Kuldeep Singh Sengar and he was arrested the same night.

7. Supreme Court intervenes, case transferred to Delhi

On August 1, 2019, the Supreme Court, taking suo motu cognizance of the case, removed the entire case from Uttar Pradesh and transferred it to Tis Hazari court of Delhi. Also, instructions were issued to provide security to the victim and her family.

8. Life imprisonment and fine

On December 20, 2019, Tis Hazari Court convicted Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping a minor. On 21 December 2019, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 25 lakh, of which Rs 10 lakh was ordered to be paid to the victim as compensation.

9. Convicted in the case of father’s death also

In March 2020, the Delhi court also convicted Kuldeep Singh Sengar and seven others in the case related to the death of the victim’s father. In this case, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

10. Security and Recent Developments

On the orders of the Supreme Court, from August 1, 2019, the victim, her relatives and the lawyer were given CRPF protection, which continued for more than six and a half years. This security was removed on April 3, 2025, although the victim’s security has been reinstated from the Delhi Unit.
