This all-rounder, who took the wicket of Kohli in IPL, said goodbye to cricket, had once made Australia cry on its own soil.

Ex New Zealand All-rounder Doug Bracewell Retires: New Zealand’s legendary all-rounder Doug Bracewell has announced his retirement from all formats of cricket. The 35-year-old player has decided to end his career, in which he played 69 matches for the ‘Black Caps’, out of which 28 matches were in the Test format. Bracewell has retired with a total of 74 Test wickets.

When made Australia cry in Hobart

His best performance came in 2011 when he took 9 wickets in a Test match as New Zealand defeated Australia by 7 runs in a famous victory in Hobart. This was the last time that New Zealand defeated its trans-Tasman rival at Test level on Australian soil. He took 3 wickets in the first innings and 6 wickets in the second innings.

Bracewell in white ball cricket

Doug Bracewell also played 41 matches in white-ball cricket in his international career, which included 2 matches for the Kiwis in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2012. He played his last international match at Test level against Sri Lanka in Wellington in 2023, but due to a recent rib injury, Bracewell had to end his career in New Zealand with home team Central Districts.

Emotional message on retirement

In a statement to ‘Central Districts’, Bracewell said, ‘It has been a proud part of my life, and something I aspired to do as a young cricketer. I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have got through cricket and the chance to play for my country, as well as for Central Districts during my domestic career. It’s been a privilege to play first-class and international cricket, and I’m grateful to have played and enjoyed the game for so long.

When Kohli’s wicket was taken

Bracewell has played only one IPL match. In the 2012 season, he made his debut for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals). He took the wickets of 3 batsmen including Virat Kohli in the debut match against RCB. But, he did not play any other Indian Premier League match after this.

Inherited cricket

Doug Bracewell’s father Brendan and uncle John have both played Test cricket for New Zealand, while his cousin Michael Bracewell is still part of the New Zealand team. Although he has not said anything about his post-retirement plans, it is expected that he would like to be a part of cricket related activities in future.
