Old data will remain completely safe

The most important thing about Google’s new feature is that your old data will not go anywhere.
Even after changing email:

• old mails will be safe
• New mails will arrive in the same inbox
• Contacts, drive files and photos will remain as before

That means only the name will change, the account will remain the same.

Old Gmail ID will not expire

When you choose a new email ID, your old Gmail ID will not be deleted. Google will add it to your account as an Alias.

This means that:

• If someone sends mail to your old ID
• So that mail will also come in your new inbox.
• You will be able to log in with both the old and new address

This means that no important mail will be missed.

How many times can you change Gmail ID?

Google has also set some limitations with this feature.

• Email ID can be changed only once in a year
• Change of ID will be allowed only maximum 3 times from one account in lifetime.

Meaning, there can be a total of 4 addresses on one Gmail account. (1 old + 3 new)

This feature can be seen first in India

The interesting thing is that the information about this feature first appeared on Google’s Hindi support page. From this it is being speculated that Google can start it from India.

Although Google has not made any major official announcement yet, it is definitely written on the support page that this feature will be gradually extended to all the users.

Different rules on office and school accounts

This facility is currently being offered only for personal Gmail accounts (@gmail.com).

If your email ID:

• the office has given
• from school or college
• or linked to a company domain (e.g. (email protected))

So to make changes in it you will have to talk to your administrator. Normal Gmail users will be able to make this change by going to their account from the My Account section.
