Sanjog Gupta becomes the new CEO of International Cricket Council (ICC) Gujarati
Announcing the new CEO, the ICC said, “The ICC welcomes Sanjog Gupta. He is preparing to lead the global journey of cricket into a transformative future.” ICC started the global recruitment process in March. More than 2,500 applications were received for this post from 25 countries. The candidates include leaders from sports governing bodies and senior corporate executives from various sectors.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said, “I am delighted to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization, which will be invaluable to the ICC. His deep understanding of global sports and the media and entertainment (M&E) sector, his constant curiosity to hear from cricket fans and his passion for technology, will all help us drive our game forward in the years to come. “It will prove to be very important in the ambition.”
Jai Shah said that our aim is to go beyond the traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport on platforms like the Olympics, so that it can spread further around the world and take deep roots in its key markets. He further said, “We considered the names of several candidates for this post, but the Nomination Committee unanimously recommended Sanjog Gupta. The ICC Board of Directors look forward to working closely with him. On behalf of everyone at the ICC, I welcome him.” ICC’s HR and Remuneration Committee had shortlisted 12 candidates whose profiles were shared with the nomination committee of ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khawaja, ECB Chairman Richard Thompson, Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva and BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia.
After a rigorous shortlisting process, the nomination committee unanimously recommended Sanjog Gupta. After further assessment and evaluation, the recommendation was approved by ICC Chairman Shah, who was then formally approved by the ICC Board.
Expressing his delight on his selection, Sanjog Gupta said, “It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is experiencing unprecedented growth. It is supported by almost two billion fans around the world. These are very exciting times for the game, with the prestige of the major tournaments growing, the breadth of commercial opportunities expanding, and the popularity of opportunities like women’s cricket reaching new heights.” He said, “The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid adoption and dissemination of technology can be the factors that will give exponential impetus to the cricket movement worldwide. I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket’s development.”
Sanjoge has played a key role in the continued growth of major cricket events such as ICC tournaments and IPL. Along with this, he has contributed in the establishment of local sports leagues like Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League. They have increased the popularity of global sporting events like the Indian Premier League and Wimbledon.
Sanjog Gupta has played a key role in expanding the business keeping in mind the customer and business objectives. He started his career as a journalist and joined Star India (हवे जीयोस्तार) in 2010. During this time, he held several important positions related to content, programming and strategy and in 2020 became the head of sports at Disney and Star India. Notably, she has played a key role in developing and successfully implementing multilingual, digital-first and women-centric sports coverage.
