Rajar Dal President and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has confirmed that all the opposition parties have agreed in principle to join hands for the United Opposition Front. Akhil Gogoi said that presently all the parties are working together in the run-up to the ensuing elections. The MLA has stated that he has had conversations with APCC President Gaurav Gogoi regarding uniting the opposition parties. “I can tell you, that all Opposition parties have willingly agreed to form an united front in the 2026 elections. But, the priority is to do it as soon as possible so that a united opposition can be picthed against the BJP,” said Gogoi.
Akhil Gogoi is part of the three Gogoi arithmetic of the opposition which has been forwarded by the Opposition. The other two Gogoi includes Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP and APCC President and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, regional party AJP president. Along with these three parties other parties such as CPIM which has one MLA in the current Assembly also are slated to be in the likely coalition.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Congress has announced that it will contest 100 of the 126 assembly seats in Assam excluding All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) which Gaurav Gogoi calls as “communal”. On the issue of alliance, Gaurav Gogoi stated, “To defeat the anti-people BJP, Congress would contest the assembly elections by forming alliances with like-minded parties. We will field candidates in 100 seats. The remaining seats would be left to alliance partners,” said Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday at an event in Tezpur marking the party’s 141st foundation day.
The Congress, which allied with the AIUDF in 2021, lost power in the state after 15 years in 2016. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power in 2021 with 75 seats. The Congress-led alliance won 50 seats, increasing its tally from 26 in 2016. It is in talks with parties such as the Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, the Communist Party of India, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for an alliance for the 2026 polls.
However, one challenge for the United Opposition will be the distribution of seats with its Raijor Dal led by Akhil Gogoi wanting more seats. As Gaurav Gogoi has already declared 100 seats for the age old party, the remaining arrangement of seats will be crucial for the opposition for a united fight against the BJP.
