16 elderly people killed in Manado nursing home fire; investigation ongoing
A massive fire broke out at **Panti Wardha Damai** nursing home in Manado, North Sulawesi province of Indonesia on December 28, 2025, killing **16 elderly people** and injuring three others.
The fire broke out in a single-storey building in Ranomut sub-district, Pal Dua district around 8:30-8:36 pm local time. Many residents were sleeping or resting, leaving them trapped inside. Firefighters extinguished the fire with the help of several engines till late evening.
Police are identifying the victims at Bhayangkara Hospital, with forensic teams examining the scene and interviewing witnesses to determine the motive. North Sulawesi police spokesman Alamsyah P. Hasibuan confirmed the death toll and the ongoing investigation. Survivors were treated at local hospitals.
The footage showed the building engulfed in flames, with locals helping people evacuate. About 30-32 elderly people lived in this facility.
Deadly fires are common in Indonesia due to lack of compliance with building construction standards.
Separately, on December 22, 2025, 15-16 people were killed and others injured in a bus accident at the Krapyak toll exit in Semarang, Central Java, when the vehicle overturned due to a high-speed collision. The rescue operation was challenging due to the stranded passengers.
