INSV Kaundinya departs from Porbandar on its maiden voyage to Muscat, PM Narendra Modi sends special congratulatory message

New Delhi. Indian Navy’s special ship INSV Kaundinya today left for its maiden voyage from Porbandar, Gujarat to Muscat, Oman. This ship has been constructed not with nails, nuts and bolts but through ancient stitching art (stitched ship technique). In this, the woods have been connected with ropes stitched from coconut coir. This ship will introduce the world to India’s cultural sovereignty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi released his special message for the maiden voyage of INSV Kaundinya.

While sharing the photo of INSV Koundinya on social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote, it is very happy to see that INSV Koundinya is leaving on its maiden voyage from Porbandar to Muscat. Built using ancient Indian stitch-ship technology, the ship reflects the rich maritime traditions of India. I heartily congratulate the designers, craftsmen, shipbuilders and the Indian Navy for their dedicated efforts in building this unique ship and realizing this dream. My best wishes to the crew, may their journey be safe and memorable as they revive our historic ties in the Gulf region and beyond.

Design taken from a 5th century painting in the Ajanta caves

This special ship has been named after the famous Indian sailor Kaundinya. Kaundinya is known to have made a sea voyage from India to South-East Asia during the ancient Indian period. The design of INSV Kaundinya was not prepared through any software but was taken from a 5th century painting made in the caves of Ajanta. Skilled artisans from Kerala worked hard for months to stitch the wooden planks together and then sealed it with natural resin and oils so that not even a drop of water could seep inside the ship. Through this technology, sailors used to build ships in ancient India and go to other countries for trade.
