Neither with Uddhav Thackeray, nor with Sharad Pawar, Congress in BMC elections with the support of Prakash Ambedkar

New alliances are being seen every day in Maharashtra for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar came together forgetting their rivalry, on the other hand Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray came together. Congress neither got the support of Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) nor Shiv Sena (UBT). After the rift with Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the party has now formed a new political alliance for the BMC elections. Congress will now contest Maharashtra elections not alone but in alliance. This alliance is shocking. Even Congress workers, who have claimed to contest in 227 wards, are not able to believe it.

Congress had claimed to contest alone on all 227 wards in the elections to be held on January 15, but on Sunday the party formed an alliance with Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) and gave it 62 seats. Leaders say that apart from VBA, Congress has given 10 seats to Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP). Republican Party of India (Gavai faction) has been given 2 seats.

Congress workers got angry

Congress had earlier decided to contest alone on 227 seats. The workers had made election preparations at their respective levels in all the 227 wards. Now many officials of Mumbai are very angry with this decision of Congress. Senior leaders of Mumbai say that why such an important decision related to the Mumbai unit was not announced earlier by the President of the state unit of Congress. Mumbai unit president Varsha Gaikwad said she was happy with the alliance and seat agreement.

Congress is shrinking

Congress politics in Maharashtra is being limited to a limited scope. Despite being part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, the party has often played a minor role. Now Congress is taking limited decisions. This thing is also bothering the local leadership of Congress.

Why are Congress workers angry?

An official of the state unit of Congress said that the party is gradually losing its independent political voice due to the influence of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray. The seat-agreement has deeply shocked the workers of Mumbai unit of Congress. The party has given more than 10 wards in 6 Lok Sabha constituencies to allies.

Interestingly, many of these wards are considered strongholds of the Bharatiya Janata Party, due to which analysts believe that the Congress has handed over these areas to the constituent parties without any tough contest. A worker said, ‘It is beyond comprehension to give ward to VBA in Prabhadevi-Mahim area. VBA, which is contesting civic elections for the first time, has been given seats in areas where there are no Dalit settlements.

What taunt has BJP made?

Referring to Vile Parle, BJP leaders said that it is the only Dalit settlement in the area where BJP and RPI workers live. Congress does not have candidates in most of the wards. The party has formed an alliance to save its honour. Now Congress workers are expressing their displeasure with their high command.
