KC Venugopal writes letter to Prime Minister Modi: Appeals for decisive action on anti-Christian violence

New Delhi. Congress organization general secretary KC Venugopal on Monday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern over the recent incidents of violence against the Christian community and urged the government to take decisive action so that such incidents do not happen in future. He also claimed that the Prime Minister and the government’s “silence” on such a subject encourages those who spread hatred.

Venugopal said in the letter, “I am writing to you with deep distress and concern over the increasing incidents of violence and intimidation against India’s Christian minority community. This is a blatant attack on the constitutional assurances given to the foundations of our democracy – religious freedom, equality and dignity. This is not just isolated bigotry, but a systematic effort to spread hatred, which is hollowing out the pluralistic soul of our nation.

Referring to several recent incidents, he said that this poison of intolerance has spread even in Kerala through right-wing organizations. Venugopal said, “These incidents are not isolated, but wounds inflicted on the core of the ‘concept of India’.” When the government system hands over its citizens to mobocracy, then how can we preach “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”?

He claimed that the silence of the Prime Minister and the government encourages those who spread hatred and gives an open invitation for violence against minorities. The Congress leader said, “This is completely unacceptable.” According to Venugopal, with only a few days left for the new year, the government should be extremely vigilant and take concrete steps to prevent any kind of violence and mischief.

He said, “I, therefore, demand immediate and decisive action from the government to take this matter on top priority, ensure that such violent incidents do not happen in future, and every citizen of the country safely enjoys the constitutional right to practice the religion of their choice without any fear.”
