Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has made a sensational claim saying that Ukraine has tried to attack the official residence of President Vladimir Putin. According to Lavrov, the attack was carried out using long-range drones in Novgorod province.
Russia has termed this entire action as ‘State Terrorism’ (State Sponsored Terrorism) and said that it will have a direct impact on future peace talks. According to statistics, about 91 long-range drone strikes were carried out by Ukraine between December 28 and 29.
Zelensky rejects Russia’s allegations
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has completely rejected all these allegations of Russia. Zelensky calls Russian claims ‘lies’ Stating this, he expressed apprehension that the Putin administration is making such allegations so that they can prepare the basis for carrying out major attacks on government buildings in Ukraine. Zelensky has instructed his people and army to remain alert and said that now everyone needs to be careful.
He has appealed to the international community, especially America, to take a tough stance on these threats by Russia and prevent peace talks from being weakened. Zelensky has expressed fear that Russia may now target the capital Kiev, as Putin has referred to ‘appropriate targets’ But there has been talk of retaliatory attack.
Russia threatened immediate retaliation
Given the horrors of the war, Russia has threatened immediate retaliation. Lavrov clarified that Russia has already determined military targets for the retaliatory strikes and that the action will be taken without any delay. However, no official information has been shared yet about whether President Putin was present at the residence at the time of the attack.
Lavrov also noted that the attack occurred while negotiations were underway for a possible peace agreement. Russia has made it clear that it will remain involved in the talks, but will now reevaluate its position.
High-level meeting with senior officials
Meanwhile, President Putin held a high-level meeting with senior Russian military officials on Monday. Putin claims that his forces are continuously expanding their control over Ukrainian territories captured in 2022, such as Donbass, Kherson and Zaporizhia. According to reports, about three-quarters of Zaporozhye is currently under Russian military control.
