Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov gave a big statement, called Taiwan an inalienable part of China

New Delhi. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has reiterated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and said Moscow strongly opposes any kind of independence for the island. Elaborating on Russia’s stance in an interview with TASS, Lavrov said that Moscow considers the Taiwan problem an internal matter of China. Emphasized that Beijing has the full right to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said the debate about Taiwan is often “far from reality and distorted by facts.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the larger context is often ignored in international discussions. Many countries, despite being publicly committed to the One-China Policy, actually support maintaining the status quo. He described such an approach as being in disagreement with China’s principle of national unification. Against this backdrop, Lavrov said Taiwan is increasingly being used as an instrument of military-strategic deterrence against Beijing. He alleged that some Western countries want to take advantage of Taiwan’s financial resources and technological capabilities, including selling expensive American weapons to Taipei. Reiterating Moscow’s long-standing position, Lavrov reminded that Russia’s support for China on the Taiwan issue is enshrined in the Treaty of Good Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation signed between Moscow and Beijing in July 2001. He said one of the main principles of the treaty is mutual support in protecting national unity and territorial integrity. Giving historical context to the issue, Lavrov said Taiwan has been self-ruled since 1949, after the Chinese Civil War. At that time Nationalist forces had retreated to the island after losing control of mainland China to Communist forces.
