The death of Angel Chakma has raised serious questions about the safety and dignity of north-eastern students across the country.

Police claim: Not a racial attack, the dispute started from a joke

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh told India Today TV that ‘there was no provocation’. He clarified that “This fight started as a joke. It does not prove anything like racism.” SSP Ajay Singh also said that the question of the accused making racial remarks does not arise because ‘one accused is a resident of Nepal and the other is from the north-eastern region.’ While talking to NDTV, he reiterated that this incident does not fall in the racial category. ‘Some people were jokingly using objectionable words among themselves, which created a misunderstanding that the comments were being directed at those students.’

Brother’s allegation: Attacked by calling him ‘Chinki’

The deceased student’s brother Michael rejected the police claims and alleged that he was targeted. He told India Today that ‘a group was drinking alcohol there. As soon as we reached, they started teasing us by calling us ‘Chinki’.” He further said, “When I protested against this, I was attacked harshly. When my brother intervened, he was stabbed in the back.”

Father’s allegation: Delay in registering FIR

Angel Chakma’s father Tarun Prasad Chakma, who is a BSF jawan, made serious allegations against the police. Michael was hit on the head, while Angel was stabbed in the neck and stomach. 24-year-old Angel Chakma died on 26 December after being hospitalized for 17 days.

Student organizations raised questions on racism

North East Students Association leader Hrishikesh Barua said that ‘this country is full of diversity. Asking students to prove that they can speak Hindi is extremely shameful.” He alleged that most students of the North-East face racism at some level or the other and there is a need for strict laws against it. Political reactions: ‘National shame’. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia described the incident as a ‘deep blow to humanity and sensitivity’.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor termed it a “national shame” and said that ‘no Indian should feel alien in his own country.’ Arvind Kejriwal described the incident as ‘heart-wrenching’ and demanded a national law against racism and hate crimes. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke to Angel’s father on phone and assured him of strict action. He said that the state government stands completely with the victim’s family. So far, five accused have been arrested in this case, while one Nepali citizen is said to be absconding.
