New Year celebrations can be slow
If you used to rely on online delivery apps for New Year’s Eve, now you have to work in the kitchen yourself. According to media reports, the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers have called for an all-India strike. These unions say that delivery workers face enormous pressure during the festive and New Year period, but their earnings continue to decline. Moreover, lack of fixed working hours and delivery without any security is a major problem for the workers.

Nationwide strike announced
The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers have announced a nationwide strike on December 25 and 31. As companies sink into profits, workers’ incomes fall proportionately, unions say. Many delivery partners spend 12-14 hours a day on the road, yet at the end of the month, they have nothing left in their pockets. Unstable hours, uncertainty about insurance and working without any security became their biggest challenges.
Why the rage against the 10-minute delivery model?
The “10-minute” and “blink delivery” models of delivery platforms are the most infuriating. Workers say this model forces them to cycle at high speeds. Each order becomes a race, competing not only for time but for their lives. Failure to meet algorithm-based targets can result in workers’ IDs being suddenly blocked, which can directly threaten their employment.
