Human Rights Commission takes cognizance of Tripura student’s murder case, seeks report from Uttarakhand government
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the murder of Tripura student Angel Chakma in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. In this case, the bench headed by Kanungo has issued a notice to the state government and sought a detailed report on the action taken so far.
The Commission has also directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Uttarakhand to ensure the safety of North-East students in the entire state on top priority basis. The report is expected to include details of the progress of the investigation, steps taken to arrest the accused and measures taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future.
Earlier on Monday, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke on phone to Tarun Prasad Chakma, father of deceased student Angel Chakma, and expressed grief over the incident and expressed condolences. He informed his father about the action taken so far in this case and said that five accused have been arrested.
CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said that one accused is still absconding. Search for him is going on A reward has also been announced by the government on the accused. He assured the father that the culprits of the incident would be given the harshest punishment. The government is completely with the victim’s family. All possible assistance will be provided to the victim’s family.
Let us tell you that on December 9 evening, Angel Chakma, a final year MBA student at Jigyasa University, had gone to the grocery store with his brother Michael Chakma. Meanwhile, some drunken youth made racial remarks at him. When the student protested, the matter escalated and the accused started beating him.
During this, Angel Chakma suffered a deep injury on his head and was stabbed with a knife in his neck and stomach. He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. He died on Friday after long treatment. There is a lot of anger in Tripura regarding the murder of the student.
