Speculation around Red Dead Redemption 2 being offered for free on the Epic Games Store has intensified in recent weeks, largely driven by an alleged leak that circulated widely online. The rumour gained momentum after a few reports claimed to reveal Epic Games’ upcoming free titles, with Red Dead Redemption 2 listed as one of the potential giveaways. Unsurprisingly, the claim caught the attention of millions of gamers and quickly went viral.
However, the excitement didn’t last long.
The leak that fooled many gamers
According to the so-called leak, Epic Games was expected to give away Jurassic World Evolution 2 on December 18, 2025. That prediction turned out to be incorrect. Instead, Epic Games surprised users by offering Jotunnslayer: Hordes of Helwhich was made available to claim for just 24 hours. This clear mismatch between the leak and the actual giveaway strongly suggests that the list was created purely for attention and lacks any real credibility.
With one of the key claims already proven false, it’s safe to say that the mention of Red Dead Redemption 2 in the leak should not be trusted.
No official word from Epic Games or Rockstar
As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the Epic Games Store or Rockstar Games regarding Red Dead Redemption 2 being free on December 31. Epic has not listed the game in its confirmed holiday giveaway lineup, and Rockstar has remained silent on any such promotion.
Given Rockstar’s history of protecting the long-term value of its flagship titles, a free-to-own release of Red Dead Redemption 2 would be highly unusual.
That said, if Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t arrive as a free title this time, it’s far more realistic to expect heavy discounts instead. The game often sees significant price cuts during major sales, sometimes paired with Epic’s store coupons to reduce the cost even further.
