India Agriculture 2025: Hit by US Tariffs, India Still Strong in Agriculture

  • Record agricultural production in India in 2025
  • Seed and Pesticide Bill expected in 2026
  • Foodgrain production over 357.73 million tonnes (MT).

India Agriculture 2025: Although US tariffs hampered agricultural exports, India’s agriculture sector ended 2025 with an estimated record foodgrain production, up from last year’s 357.73 million tonnes (MT), while GST reforms brought relief to raw material prices. Stakeholders now await the passage of important seed and pesticide bills in the new year. Officials said this year showed both strengths and weaknesses; Cuts in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates led to significant cost savings, while US tariffs diversified the market.

In an interview to a news agency, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi said, ‘We expect record foodgrain production to be achieved in 2025-26 (July-June).’ Kharif production has been positive and rabi sowing is going well. Kharif sowing was boosted by more than southwest monsoon rains.
