World Blitz Championship: India’s Grandmaster Arjun Erigay defeated world number one player Magnus Carlsen in the World Blitz Championship. Carlsen’s lack of timing resulted in his defeat during the ninth round. Immediately after the loss, Carlsen could not control his anger and hit his hand on the table. He had expressed his anger of defeat in the same manner earlier also. Even after losing to D Gukesh in Norway Chess in June 2025, he hit the table hard.

During the match, Carlsen appeared slow to respond to Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaysi’s moves in time. When he raised the queen to run, there were only four seconds left. While picking up the queen, his hand touched it and the pawn fell down. It took time to pick up and eventually ran out of moves, causing Carlsen to lose the match. World Blitz 2024 co-champions Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi have nine points on day one. Six more rounds will be played the next day to reach the semi-finals, after which the final will take place.
