Chitrangda Singh on audience response to ‘Housefull 5’ humour

Chitrangda Singh has stepped into an ongoing discussion around humour and audience expectations following reactions to her film Housefull 5.

During her recent conversation, the 49-year-old actress stated, the viewers can sometimes become a little too judgmental while watching films that rely heavily on physical comedy.

In an interview with News18 Showshathe Desi Boyz star shared that when performers sign a film, they only respond to what’s written in the script.

“You don’t hear a shot breakdown when you listen to a story,” she explained, adding that how a scene is finally filmed depends largely on the director’s vision.

As discussions around objectification and body based punchlines gained buzz online, the actress admitted the comments did make her pause.

However, she clarified that she isn’t trying to defend the film or silence criticism.

According to her, actors have limited control once the camera starts rolling, and physical comedy, especially involving women can sometimes feel uncomfortable if it doesn’t land right.

Moreover, she pointed out how reactions often depend on whether a joke works.

“When something lands, everyone laughs. When it doesn’t, that’s when the criticism begins,” she said, noting that exaggerated physical humour has existed across cinema for decades, including in popular Hollywood comedies.

Additionally, the actor also compared the situation to films from other genres, mentioning how Dhurandhar faced debates over its violent tone.

For her, it all comes down to storytelling choices. Every genre has its own language, and comedy is no different.

Professionally, after appearing in Netflix’s Raat Akeli Hai: The Bansal MurdersChitrangda is set to star alongside Salman Khan in the upcoming action drama Battle of Galwan.
