PM Modi’s concerns and experts’ opinion
Increasing risk of antibiotic resistance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed deep concern over the issue of inappropriate use of antibiotics and the resulting antibiotic resistance. In his radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat’ he clarified that “antibiotics are not medicines which should be taken without proper consultation.”
The Prime Minister referred to a recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which stated that many antibiotics are no longer effective against common diseases such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections. He said that this condition is a matter of concern for everyone and if it is not handled on time, the treatment will become even more difficult.
PM Modi’s warning
PM Modi said that use of antibiotics without doctor’s advice is the main cause of this problem. He warned that the idea that “one pill will cure every disease” is making infections stronger than drugs. Due to this, bacteria are becoming resistant to medicines. He urged people to avoid self-medicating, especially antibiotics. The Prime Minister said that it is mandatory to consult a doctor before taking medicine for any disease. He stressed that responsible use of medicines is essential not only for individual health, but also for society, so that the life-saving medicines can be effective.
expert opinion
Health experts have already warned that antimicrobial resistance is becoming one of India’s biggest public health challenges. According to ICMR, the use of antibiotics without prescription is rapidly increasing this problem, which can make even common infections difficult to treat.
Dr. Arun Sidram Kharat, Professor of Microbiology at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said that antimicrobial resistance has become one of the biggest global health threats of the 21st century. They pointed out that inappropriate use of antibiotics delays treatment, increases costs, and forces doctors to use more effective drugs, which can have serious side effects. He warned that if concrete steps are not taken in time, antimicrobial resistance could become one of the leading causes of death worldwide by 2050. Therefore, we need to be extremely careful in its use, as it can have harmful consequences.
