Why do ears suddenly start ringing in winter? If you don’t cover them, you will suffer from throat and headache.

News India Live, Digital Desk: When the temperature drops, we cover our chest and throat with mufflers, but leave our ears at the mercy of the wind. The structure of the ears is such that there is neither fat protection nor much muscle in it. In such a situation, the icy wind falling directly cools the ‘control room’ of your body i.e. the ears immediately.

What is the relationship of the ears to the rest of the body?

You may be surprised to know that your ears, nose and throat are connected together by a thin tube, which is called ‘Eustachian tube’.

  1. Effect on throat and nose: When cold outside air goes directly into the ears, it not only causes ear pain but also worsens the pressure in your throat and nose through this tube. Many times people feel that they have a throat infection, whereas the root of the problem is cold ears.
  2. Headache and Migraine: The nerves of the ear are directly connected to the part of your brain that senses pain. Being too cold can cause swelling in the nerves, causing a severe headache or feeling like ‘brain freeze’.
  3. Jaw Pain: Do you also suddenly feel strain in your teeth or jaw in winter? Actually, the nerves behind the ears have a deep connection with the jaw. Cold in the ears often causes stiffness in the facial nerves.

Why do ears suffer more in winter?

Ear infections and ‘tinnitus’ (a whistling sensation in the ears) become very common during the winter season. The reason for this is the sluggish blood circulation in the body due to low temperature. Decreased blood flow to the ears reduces their own heat, making them more likely to swell.

Some ‘desi’ and easy methods of prevention:

  • Use of scarf or hat: This is not for fashion, but a necessity. Always cover your ears when going out.
  • Light hot oil: If you feel pain in the ear, then grandmother’s remedy ‘light hot mustard oil’ is very useful, but take care that there is no wound in the ear.
  • Be careful after bathing: People often go out with wet ears, which is the biggest reason for catching a cold. Dry the hair and the outer part of the ears thoroughly.
  • Sesame laddu or gum: It may sound strange, but things with such properties keep the body warm from within, which also keeps the nerves of the ears healthy.
