India’s action created panic in Pakistan, another blow to Indus Water Treaty, know what happened next

India-Pakistan: After an important decision of the Indian Government, India-Pakistan relations have once again become heated. Political rhetoric has started in Pakistan after the second phase of Dulhasti Hydropower Project to be built on Chenab River got the green signal from the Expert Committee of the Environment Ministry. Pakistan is calling it a violation of the Indus Water Treaty, while India is considering it as its internal and legitimate development work.

Dulhasti project got approval

On 27 December, the Expert Committee of the Environment Ministry of India gave environmental clearance to Dulhasti Hydropower Project Stage-2. This project is located on the Chenab River and is planned to generate about 260 MW of power. After this decision, energy production and development in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to get a new momentum.

Pakistan’s political turmoil

This step of India has created a stir in Pakistan. Pakistani MP and former climate minister Sherry Rehman hit out at India on social media platform X, saying that “weaponizing water is wrong and not acceptable at any level.” He alleged that India is unilaterally withdrawing from the Indus Water Treaty.

Allegations regarding many projects on Chenab

Sherry Rehman claimed that India is rapidly pursuing controversial projects one after the other on the Chenab River. Taking the names of Savalkot, Rattle, Bursar, Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kirthai and now Dulhasti Stage-2, he said that all these projects are a matter of concern for Pakistan. Pakistan is looking at it by linking it to water security.

Changed stance after Pahalgam attack

India took a tough stance against Pakistan after the death of 22 tourists in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 this year. After this, India took several tough steps, including temporarily suspending the Indus Water Treaty and stopping sharing data related to the river with Pakistan. This is having a direct impact on Pakistan’s water plans and projects.

“Blood and water cannot flow together”

After the terrorist attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had clearly said that “blood and water cannot flow together.” India believes that it is completely free to use its share of water and resources. Projects like Dulhasti and Sawalkot will not only increase power generation but will also open new avenues of development and employment in the border areas.
